Monroe's School Board has set two evenings to hear the community's advice about funding local public schools. Families, neighbors, business owners and taxpayers are welcome at any of the two sessions.
The first session is slated for Monday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Hidden River Middle School, 9224 Paradise Lake Rd., Snohomish. The second will be Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Park Place Middle School, 1408 W. Main St., Monroe.
The conversation will highlight the current support from local taxpayers and the future of that support. Currently, about 20% of everything Monroe Public Schools accomplishes is funded by local taxpayers through the "learningGÇ¥ levy. Each evening will include some of the accomplishments past funding has provided and upcoming challenges for future funding.
The learning levy has helped improve student learning with the purchase of new textbooks and staff training to improve instruction. The levy also supports school bus routes, help for struggling students and special programs such as art, music, after-school activities and athletics.
Last approved in 2012, the learning levy expires in December, 2014. Local voters will be asked in February to renew local funding. In October members of the School Board are expected to set priorities for the levy including the amount and duration.
If unable to attend, community members are urged to send their thoughts by email to schoolboard@monroe.wednet.edu or call 360-804.2503.
