The Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7511 will host the second annual Flags of our Fallen event at Lake Tye Park on Saturday, May 26.
This free Memorial Day Weekend event is meant to foster patriotism and respect for fallen veterans.
Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas will provide a welcoming message, followed by a speech by Nick Jacobson with VFW Post 7511, a bagpipe performance by Monroe Police Sgt. Brian Johnston and a 5K run/walk around Lake Tye. Presentations begin at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K at 10.
Registration for the 5K is $40, and includes an event shirt. Children 12 and under can participate for free. A student discount is available by asking volunteers at the registration table. Online registration is available at flags4rfallen.com.
All funds raised during the event will benefit VFW Post 7511.
Vendor booth space is available at a suggested donation of $50, and veteran-owned businesses and organizations can participate at no cost.
Businesses can sponsor the event for $500, which will ensure their logo on social media and printed promotional materials supporting Post 7511 for the following year.
“Whether, walking, running, pushing a stroller, or just hanging out and visiting with us at Lake Tye, this is an event for everyone. Especially families,” said Post 7511 Quartermaster Jaymie Weber in a news release. “Instilling a strong sense of patriotism in our youth is such an important part of the VFW mission, and sharing the true meaning of Memorial Day with our young ones is a wonderful way to do that.”
