Music promoter Keith Brock was at the March 19 city council meeting to give an update on the Monroe Music Festival, "Dare to Dream,GÇ¥ to take place Sept. 7 at Lake Tye Park.
He told the council he'd met earlier that day with guest performer John Popper. Popper, who lives in Snohomish, is best known for playing harmonica with the band Blues Traveler. Brock and his band, the LA Allstars, is also in the line-up.
A new website for the event, www.monroemusicfest.com will be launched in early April and updated regularly with news about performers, concessions, directions and parking, with a link to ticket sales. Tickets are expected to go on sale in early April.
Monroe Parks and Recreation Director Mike Farrell told the council that local food vendors Sahara Pizza, Ixtapa, and the Buzz Inn will have concessions and the Evergreen Speedway's High Road Productions is bringing in a wine and beer garden.
The outdoor festival will have lawn seating, so bringing a chair or blanket is encouraged. General admission will be $20; children 12 years and younger will be free. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the music will begin at 6 p.m. There will be free parking at the athletic fields off Fryelands Boulevard.
Ethics code revisions
The council directed the city attorney to look at revising Monroe's ethics code with the aim of cleaning up ambiguities in the language and sections that may be confusing, especially that section regarding conflicts of interests.
One portion in the city's code addressing conflicts of interest had been inadvertently removed during an amendment addition, and as a housekeeping detail was on the March 19 council agenda to be reinstated.
But council member Kurt Goering called that a "band-aidGÇ¥ solution, calling the current ethics code unclear, confusing and vague, in general.
"There are so many things that need to be changed,GÇ¥ he said.-á Referring to the section on conflict of interest, he said, "It adds more confusion to what conflict of interest is.GÇ¥
One paragraph in the conflict of interest section in the ethics code was brought forward through a citizens' initiative and it was agreed that the language should remain as is; that provision states that no one serving on boards, commissions or on city staff can be awarded city contracts.
While the code is under revision, it leaves in place the city's ethics board and procedures for dealing with any ethics complaints that may be brought forward.
