Regarding the Monroe Music Festival: It lost $36,000.00. That's a lot of taxpayer expense. I'm a musician, and I went. I had a good time. The Randy Oxford Band and the other opening country act were both very good. I'd like to see it continue. However: To draw a crowd Monroe would have to hire a name band instead of studio musicians (who were very good, no question) playing cover tunes with only one rehearsal. Monroe would then be competing with the Evergreen State Fair, the Tulalip Casino outdoor venue, and other local concert venues. That can be a tough go. And it takes professional organizers and experienced concert promoters to pull off events of this magnitude, all of which are expensive (as we found out). The concert was almost canceled due to rain in the morning also. Planning anything outdoors in Washington, no matter what time of year, is a huge crap shoot and the chances of the weather cooperating is 50-50 at best. The musicians and, city employees, and park department personnel did a great job. I commend them and I think they could do it again. I'd like to see it scaled back to an affordable size, with less risk, with more good local acts. I think it could be done and could be successful. If the event succeeds, makes money, and is well received it could be upgraded year by year. Just my thoughts.
