A late-night motorist had to leave her car to be struck by an eastbound train after getting stuck on railroad tracks at Kelsey Street, just south of State Route 2 in Monroe on Friday.
Officers were dispatched to the tracks around 11:41 p.m. for a report of a vehicle that appeared stuck in the roadway.
The first officer on the scene checked the car, confirming no one was inside. He then had to leave the tracks as the train rapidly approached, according to a Monroe Police news release. The train pushed the car 500 feet down the tracks before stopping.
The motorist told investigators she was driving to work, but was unfamiliar with the area. She turned right when directed by her GPS, ending up on the tracks. She said she tried to back up, but couldn’t get the vehicle to move, according to the release, then saw smoke. She left the car and called her husband.
The train blocked the crossings at Kelsey Street and 179th Avenue Southeast for hours, the release states, clearing the tracks just before 4 a.m. Saturday.
Investigators from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway responded.
