Just in time for sunny summer days filled with adventure, Sultan's free community Bike Rodeo event will help teach kids the rules of the road and bicycle safety.
Sponsored by Sultan Cub Scout Pack No. 52 and the Sky Valley Eagles Club, the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Sultan Skate Park near First and Main Street. The bike rodeo will include instruction on proper hand signals, free helmet checks, first aid information presented by Sultan's Fire District No. 5, a bike repair station and a one-and-a-quarter mile road course.
Sultan Cub Scout Pack No. 52 Cub Master Julianna Johnson conceptualized the Bike Rodeo event last fall as a way to promote safe and fun activities for kids.-á
"A lot of kids don't know how to ride safely,GÇ¥ Johnson said. "This event should help teach them.GÇ¥
The event will also include information on how to register bicycles so that they can be identified in the case of theft. This was another motivating factor for Johnson: When her son Tyler's bicycle was stolen out of their yard last year, they didn't have definitive information to give to law enforcement because they hadn't recorded the bike's serial number. -á
All bicycles have unique serial numbers that are typically on the bottom portion of the bike frame. Without this unique identifier, law enforcement officers are unable to return stolen bikes that are located, because they can't determine who they belong to.-á
Johnson is working with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office to coordinate the bike registry aspect of event.-á
