Police make arrests in MHS stadium vandalism


 
An adult and three teenagers were arrested Wednesday night at the Monroe High School stadium, after they allegedly drove an SUV through a chain-link fence and caused significant damage to a section of the football field.
Monroe Police officers responded to the stadium on the 17000 block of Tester Road around 11 p.m. Wednesday, after receiving a report of a loud vehicle in the vicinity.
Officers stopped a Chevy Blazer coming toward them in the parking lot and observed field turf covering the rear side, according to a news release.
The four occupants allegedly told police they were meeting a friend and did not know how field turf ended up on the vehicle.
Officers found a damage section of fence at the stadium and fresh tire marks in several areas around the field ' from the end zone to the 40-yard line. The damage is expected to be several thousand dollars.
The 17-year-old Snohomish driver and two other 17-year-olds from Monroe and Snohomish were booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center for first-degree malicious mischief. Two of the teenagers are Monroe School District students, according to the police news release. Police report alcohol is-ánot believed to have been a factor.
A 24-year-old passenger, Christopher A. Carey of Sedro Woolley, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail, also for first-degree malicious mischief.
Monroe Public Schools spokeswoman Rosemary O'Neill said the MSD students will likely face punishment from the school district, which will be based on their progressive history of offenses.
"We were very saddened to learn about that,GÇ¥ she said of the damage to the football field. "Currently, the field is closed until we can have our experts out to tell us what they can do with our field.GÇ¥
O'Neill added time is of the essence, as stadium activity starts soon for fall sports.
