Reading is magic

By Chris Hendrickson, Contributing Writer
Sultan Elementary School Students enjoyed a high-energy performance by Olympia magician Jeff Evans on Friday morning, as a reward for meeting their reading goals for three consecutive months.
The event was facilitated by Read-at-Home parent volunteer Polly Bridgewater who solicited a $1,000 grant from Xtreme Consulting Group in Kirkland to accommodate the performance.
Read-at-Home is an incentive-based program designed to motivate kids to spend more of their free time reading books. Kids who meet certain monthly reading goals are eligible for prizes and popcorn parties.
Bridgewater invited Kevin Vick of Vick's Burger Shack to attend the show. Bridgewater joined forces with Vick's Burger Shack when she developed her new Classic Readers Program, which is an effort meant to inspire kids to read classic books.
Every student who reads a classic book and is able to pass a short quiz is given a certificate to receive a free cheeseburger meal at Vick's, located near Bubba's Roadhouse on U.S. 2 in Sultan.
Evans, who has been performing magic since he was 12 years old, performed an entertaining series of reading-theme magic tricks, often inviting student participation.
