Registration open for sixth annual Officer Jayme Biendl Memorial Run

By Brandon Macz

It's time again to sign up for the Officer Jayme Biendl Memorial Run, which supports the Behind the Badge Foundation and honors the former Monroe Correctional Complex officer.

Biendl, 34, was killed in 2011 by Byron Eugene Scherf while she was working inside the chapel at the correctional complex. Scherf was sentenced to death following his murder conviction in 2013. He has filed two appeals since then.

The 5K run starts 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Sky River Park, 818 Village Way, and the $30 registration covers a memorial run shirt, while they last. Preregistrants can pick up shirts on run day. The route winds through the Washington State Reformatory grounds.

The Behind the Badge Foundation provides support for families and communities following a line-of-duty death by a law enforcement officer or serious injury. The foundation was selected by the family of Jayme Biendl.
