John Abano, a physician with Providence Medical Group, hands over a check from Providence Medical Group to the American Cancer Society at the Relay for Life of Sky Valley. The check brought Providence Medical Group's donation to $4,500.
It was part of a record-setting year for the Sky Valley Relay for Life.
"We raised more than $124,000, $6,000 more than last year," said co-organizer Kevin Johnson. "With 72 teams, we smashed last year's record of 60 teams. And we had 145 registered survivors, again an event record, breaking the previous total of 121.
The relay only fell short of one goal, and it had been a lofty one.
"We failed to reach our 'Gordy Goal,' named after Relay for Life pioneer Dr. Gordy Klatt, of $200,000 and 200 survivors," he said.
That meant the mayor of Monroe got to keep his hair. Robert Zimmerman had vowed to shave it should the Gordy Goal be reached.
Many participants, including the Star Wars costume group 501st Legion, appeared in costume in keeping with this year's theme, "May the Cure Be With You.
