Senior Focus: New Year, new body!

Holly Glen Gearhart
Who says we cannot improve our physical bodies after 60? I grew up thinking that but now that I am 60 and way out of shape, I am out to prove "meGÇ¥ wrong.
You may remember that last fall I found some great information about physical activity and its impact on diabetes II and heart health. The information was free and designed for us over 50 by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Aging.
The program is called "Go4LifeGÇ¥ and some of the nutritional guidelines and exercises are offered at our own East County Senior Center. If you would like to have some of this information, it is available for free and can be ordered online, with free shipping at http://go4life.nia.nih.gov/ or by calling 1-800-222-2225.
I received the information I ordered in about two weeks. I ordered one DVD which contains "Go4Life, Your Everyday Guide,GÇ¥ a few health-related pamphlets and a very useful guide book. The book is easy to read, the information easy to follow and relate to and it has plenty of photos to guide you through exercises from the traditional "sit and be fitGÇ¥ chair exercises to using flex bands.
The book is a great addition because not everyone has a DVD player. The book is easy to follow and the font (text) size is large enough to read (even with my bifocals). There is a daily record in the back for activity entries so that you can track your progress.
The DVD is great. It has chapters that are guided by a personal trainer. The personal trainer visits people in their own homes, and she shows each person how to use the program using things in their environment; food cans, tennis balls and even orange juice bottles. The DVD runs 54 minutes and is a good overview to improving your endurance, strength, balance and flexibility, four important things we commonly lose as we age.
In the past I found that exercise tapes and books for seniors were badly produced but these materials are written to inform the viewer, not talk down to them or make them feel too out of shape or too old. I am looking forward on the progress I can make using these materials!
