Monroe Covenant Church Pastor Mac Taylor mourned the loss of community member Greg Netherton this week, offering support to those that knew him.
Netherton, 22, was a friend and member of the community at Take the Next Step (TTNS), a Monroe-based nonprofit agency dedicating to serving low-income and homeless individuals. He was found in Al Borlin Park in Monroe on Monday, May 18, deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner declared the manner of death as suicide.
Taylor addressed the Take the Next Step community during the weekly dinner event on Tuesday, May 26.
"We're hoping to do a memorial service next Tuesday night after the dinner,GÇ¥ Taylor said. "We'd love for you to stay for that as we grieve together as a community.GÇ¥
The memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, after the 6 p.m. community dinner at the Monroe Covenant Church (202 S. Sams St.). Anyone who would like to attend the service is welcome. A microphone will be available to those who would like to say a few words about Netherton.
"I've known Greg for about six years,GÇ¥ Taylor said. "This was really hard news.GÇ¥
Taylor reminded all those in attendance that Take the Next Step can help provide resources to its community members experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts. The organization offers healthy meals, a safe place to gather and a welcoming environment to anyone in need.
"If you're going through hard times, we want to be there with you,GÇ¥ Taylor said. "If you're having some suicidal thoughts, if you're having some depression, there's places for you to go and people that can help.
"Please know that we love you, that God loves you, and we want to be with you in everything that's going on,GÇ¥ he said.
