Sheriff's office recruiting citizens for academy

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Sultan Police Department, is offering a free, 13-week program for residents of the Sky Valley to learn more about day-to-day operations of law enforcement.
The Sky Valley Citizens Academy will start on February 6, 2014. Classes will be held at Sultan Middle School on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with one Saturday field trip.
"The Citizens Academy is a fun and exciting program, with lots of interaction between citizens and deputies,GÇ¥ said Lt. Monte Beaton, chief of the Sultan Police.
The program will include classroom training, hands-on participation and the opportunity to ride on patrol with a deputy. Attendees will learn about:
  • Patrol procedures and equipment
  • Traffic operations and collision -á-á-á-á investigations
  • K-9 enforcement
  • Drugs and gangs
  • Domestic violence
  • Child abuse
  • Crime scene technology
  • Major crime investigations
  • Sex offenders
  • Jail operations
  • Search and rescue
  • Special weapons and tactics (SWAT)
