It is time to get ready for Sultan's 31st annual summer Shindig event!
The celebration, which is meant to celebrate Sultan's rich logging heritage, will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 11 and will continue through Sunday, July 13. The event includes a parade, a street fair, a carnival with rides, a car show, live musical performances and a distinct nod to the area's logging history with several logging competitions and challenges.
Friday's festivities will kick off with carnival rides from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m., featuring milder rides oriented towards children, as well as more daring rides for teens and adults.-á At 4 p.m. the street fair will open which will include food vendors and many other booths dedicated to local businesses, nonprofits, artists and activities for kids.
Gold Dust Days Royalty will have a booth giving any Sky Valley girls interesting in participating in July's Royalty pageant an opportunity to sign up. They are also encouraging folks to donate to their latest fundraising effort called "Clothes for the Cause.GÇ¥ Items accepted include clothing, shoes, towels, sheets, blankets, quilts and more.
Sultan's own Snohomish County Fire District No. 5 will have a booth and are welcoming everyone to stop by and say hello.
Food vendors will be located near the vicinity of River Park and will include barbecue, pizza, ice cream cones, roasted corn and teriyaki.
Musical performances will start at 4 p.m. at the main stage gazebo located on Main Street near the Veteran's Day memorial.-á Friday's entertainment will include the Shimmylicious Belly Dancers at 5 p.m., the Shortcutz from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and performing from 9:30 to 11 p.m. will be the award-wining blues band, Polly O'Keary & the Rhythm Method.
The Show & Shine car show, which will begin at 6 p.m., will include contests for best flames, best interior, best engine compartment, loudest pipes and loudest stereo. The Friday night car show will take place at 4th and Main Street.
Saturday will begin with a themed children's parade at 10 a.m., featuring kids dressed up as their favorite book characters. No registration is required for the children's parade, and while costumes are not required, they are strongly encouraged. At 10:30, the Grand Parade will begin, led by Grand Marshals Aaron and Cathy Day and their family. Cathy and Aaron Day are active community volunteers who perform extensive service in the Sky Valley area.
The classic car show will begin immediately after the parade, and will be held at the east end of Main Street this year, near the Dutch Cup Motel. Folks are welcome to hitch a ride on one of Shindig's free hay wagons, which will travel back and forth from the car show to Shindig's carnival and street fair area located at River Park.
The logging contest begins at 1:00 p.m. and will include many entertaining challenges including speed spar-pole climbing, climbing races, axe throwing, an obstacle course, firewood chopping, sawing events, both a chockerman's and hooktender's race and more. Competitors from all around the state come to participate in Sultan's logging show.
Saturday's musical performances at the gazebo will include Steve Kelly's Cascade Range from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., a YMCA Zumba Party from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m., the Josh Moser "90s Cover Band from 4 to 5 p.m., Sultan High School's Show Choir from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., best of Sultan's Lip Sync from 7 to 8 p.m., and from 8:30 to 11 p.m. the Seattle cover band Free Rain will perform.
Sunday will kick off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Sultan Senior Center. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will be held at Volunteers of America, located at 701 1st St. in the large A-frame. Sultan Senior Center volunteer Marlene Carlson would like to invite all to attend the breakfast which will include pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and much more.
At 10 a.m. on Sunday, a non-denominational community church service will be held in River Park, and the logging contest finals will start at 1 p.m. also in River Park. Sultan Shindig's 2014 Logging Grand Marshall is Roy Sartaine.
Other Sunday performances at the gazebo include the Salina Dance Academy from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and at 1:45 Gold Dust Days Royalty will perform a special production. The last performance of the day will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. with country music performer Dakota Neuman.
All Shindig enthusiasts are encouraged to purchase discounted day passes, which will be available up until July 11 at the following locations: Sky Valley Visitors Center, Coastal Community Bank, Sultan City Hall, The Loggers Inn, Sultan Liquor & Convenience, the Coffee Corral, Sahara Pizza and the Mt. View Diner in Gold Bar. Discounted tickets are $20 for one day of unlimited rides.
Sultan Lip Sync Competition Winners who wish to perform at Shindig are being asked to contact Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Director Debbie Copple at the Sultan Visitor's Center at 360-793-0983.
Shindig logging shirts are available for purchase at the Sultan Visitor's Center for $15 each.-á Shirts are available for both children and adults.
