A generation ago, hanging lights on the house was something one only did at Christmas. Then orange lights started cropping up around Halloween, and in recent weeks, many a Seattle-area sports fan has decked out the trees in blue and green lights.
Now it seems there is outdoor decor for any of the winter holidays, when colored lights can liven up a long, gloomy evening, and that includes Valentine's Day.
Here are some ideas for sweetening up your yard for the holiday.
Lights
While most stores aren't selling strings of lights specifically for Valentine's Day, Lowe's has strings of 70 lights in red or white for about $30 each. Twist a strand of each together and trim your door or a tree.
Ornaments
Big outdoor ornaments aren't just for Christmas anymore; large green and blue baubles dangled from many a 12th Man tree in recent weeks, and a few large red, pink or white heart shapes can brighten up a yard considerably.
These ornaments, available at Real Deals on Home Decor in Monroe, open in the Fryelands Thursday, Friday and Saturday, range from a couple of dollars to about $8 each. Some would withstand a light rain reasonably well; others should come in at night if bad weather is possible.
Try hanging a few from the eaves of a porch, or dangling them inside your windows where they will be visible from the street.
Wreath of roses
Wreaths can be made to celebrate just about any season, from floral Easter wreaths to fragrant cedar wreaths for the holidays. A wreath of red artificial roses is all it takes to add a dash of vivid color to a door, and to reflect the romance of Valentine's Day.
