Sky Valley Little League season opens Saturday

Nothing says springtime like Saturdays spent at the baseball field watching pitches fly, listening to the crack of the bat and seeing runners cross home plate. And thanks to Sky Valley Little League, the Monroe community will soon have the opportunity to do just that.

The Sky Valley Little League's annual season kick-off jamboree takes place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Rotary Field in Monroe. Opening ceremonies begin at 11 a.m., with special guests including major league baseball player Brent Lillibridge, local softball superstar and Monroe High School graduate Jordan Birch and Webbly, the official mascot of the Everett AquaSox.

The Monroe Fire Department will be on-hand from noon to 2 p.m. to show their support for the community event.

The jamboree will offer everybody's favorite game-day delicacies, including Yoforit Frozen Yogurt, Giddy Up BBQ, Jonny Kettle Corn, Surf Shack Espresso, Tacos Monte Alban and Ezell's Express. Other vendors include the Washington National Guard, Baden Sports, Base by Pros, the Washington State Department of Corrections and Elite Training Academy.

"We are grateful for the generous support of our local sponsors, league families and the community,GÇ¥ said Sky Valley Little League officials in a news release.

The Sky Valley Little League is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe and positive environment for kids to learn baseball and softball. The organization seeks to help its participants build a strong athletic foundation by promoting strength of character, courage and loyalty, in addition to allowing them to hone their athletic skills. It aims to provide solid leadership; emphasizing teamwork, fairness and good sportsmanship.

Most of all, it allows kids to have a great time on the field.-á

In addition to the opening ceremonies, the jamboree will include mini-games and other activities. Prize raffle tickets will be available for purchase throughout the day. All proceeds from the event support Sky Valley Little League, helping to fund field use, uniforms and equipment. The event is open to the community.

Monroe resident Jason Gamble is an active little league parent and a member of the Monroe City Council. The event is strongly rooted in tradition, and is a way to formally usher in the spring season, Gamble said. It's also an opportunity to showcase Monroe's Rotary Field, which was made possible through a partnership between the city and Monroe Rotary Club, which launched a major fundraising effort to pay for the field.

But mostly it's a chance for parents to get out and enjoy a day of league activities with their kids. There will be team photos, and kids will take the little league pledge, he said.

"It's kind of the pomp and circumstance for little league,GÇ¥ Gamble said.

Monroe's Rotary Field is located at 372 Sky River Parkway in Monroe. For more information about Sky Valley Little League, visit www.svll.org/home.-á
