Students from the Skykomish School will be holding two separate fundraising events in an effort to help bring clean water to a village in Kenya.
Saturday, May 11 there will be a carwash at Skykomish Deli from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Monday, June 3 there will be a volleyball tournament in the Skykomish School gymnasium. The volleyball tournament will start at 6 p.m. and donations are welcome at both events.
"Our kids earmarked the money to go to the fresh water because living where we do, we sometimes take for granted our natural resources like clean water,GÇ¥ said Bill Atkinson
All donations will go to the non-profit organization Free the Children to support their Adopt GÇôa-Village program. Free the Children is an international organization which focuses on empowering youth and encouraging them to work toward global change.
Free the Children believes that when working towards a solution to poverty, there are five integral elements that need to be brought together. Those are; education, water and sanitation, health, alternative income and livelihood, and agriculture and food security.
The organization's mission statement is: "To create a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change.GÇ¥
Skykomish School students chose to work toward providing water and sanitation, and selected Kenya as their region of focus because they have recently been studying the area.
The Skykomish Deli is located just off U.S. 2 at 148 N. 5th St., and Skykomish School is located at 100 Railroad Ave. in Skykomish.
