Spirit of the Apple Cup comes to Monroe

The University of Washington Huskies versus the Washington State University Cougars; it's a classic rivalry that has stretched beyond a century.
This year, that rivalry comes to Monroe.
With their new "All in for KidsGÇ¥ challenge, Lakeside Industries and the Monroe Public Schools Foundation are giving citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their loyalty to either the Huskies or the Cougars through a pre-Apple Cup charity matchup. All contributions will be made in the name of either the Huskies or the Cougars, and whichever team receives the highest level of donations will have their flag flown above the Lakeside Industries asphalt plant for the month leading up to the Apple Cup.
The Monroe Public Schools Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting the local public schools. The foundation's mission is "to develop and provide community support to strengthen the achievement of all students within the Monroe Public Schools.GÇ¥
The concept for "All in for KidsGÇ¥ was developed by the foundation's Executive Director, Sue Skillen, and Lakeside Industries Monroe Division Manager Gail Land, who were brainstorming ways to raise money for local students. They figured that a feisty Husky versus Cougar charity matchup would be a great way to raise money, and blood pressures, around the area.
All proceeds generated by the "All in for KidsGÇ¥ challenge will benefit the Monroe Public Schools Foundation. Monroe School District students will benefit via classroom grants, student scholarships, emergency needs programming and much more.
Land explained that Lakeside, as a company, strongly encourages employees at the management level to give back to the communities of which they are a part. In the past they've enjoyed working with local organizations like the Sky Valley Food Bank and Housing Hope.
The idea of supporting the Monroe Public Schools Foundation was especially appealing to Land, who is excited about doing something to benefit Monroe's youth.
"It was just one more way that we could be a member of the community,GÇ¥ said Land. "And helping kids; what better way is there?GÇ¥
The foundation will accept donations until the end of October, at which point the funds will be calculated and the winner will be announced. The winning team will have their flag flown high above Monroe until just before the Apple Cup, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Nov. 29.
