The Sultan Sportsmen's Club will award scholarships for one girl and one boy to attend the 2014 Washington Youth Conservation Camp.
For over 60 years the Washington State Youth Conservation Camp has been educating the youth of the Pacific Northwest about the outdoors and how to enjoy and preserve it for future generations. The camp instructs campers from ages 12 to 16 in areas such as mountain hiking, ecology, archery, fisheries, fly tying, fly casting, water safety, first aid/CPR, firearm safety, marine biology, survival, game management, and leadership.
The scholarships are for youth who will turn 12 by July 10, 2014 and will not yet be 17 by the time camp starts.
The camp is held at Camp Moran Environmental Learning Center in Moran State Park on Orcas Island. The girls' camp is July 13-19, and boys' camp is July 20-26.
Interested youth may apply for the scholarship by submitting a letter of application. The letter should include the child's name, address, age and a single page letter about "Why I want to go to the Youth Conservation Camp.GÇ¥
Winners will be chosen based on legibility/word processing quality; grammar and correct use of conventions; and content. The judges will be the principal of Sultan Middle School and the principals of Sultan High School.
Entries may be submitted in person or by mail to Sultan Middle School, 301 High Ave., or Sultan High School, 13715 310th Ave. S.E. All entries must be received by June 20, 2014. Winners will be selected on June 25 and announced on June 26.
