SR 530 Slide Memorial Committee seeking artists

The SR 530 Slide Memorial Committee is seeking an artist to develop a sculpture that honors the community of Steelhead Drive by recreating the iconic mailbox cluster lost during the deadly 2014 Oso Landslide.

The 19 mail and newspaper boxes, visible from State Route 530, were “a landmark for visitors and those driving by the neighborhood,” according to a news release from the Snohomish County Arts Commission, which is assisting with the memorial project, “… a place to tie balloons for birthdays, a place to catch up with your neighbor.”

The committee will work with the selected artist and a group of stakeholders to create the sculpture, which would be sited near the original mailbox cluster and be part of the entry to the memorial site.

The contract is set at $30,000, which includes all costs associated with the project, including design and permit fees, materials, fabrication, transportation and installation.

Proposals are due to Hal Gausman with the Snohomish County Arts Commission by 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 3. They may ben sent to Hal.Gausman@snoco.org or 14405 179th Ave. S.E., Monroe, WA, 98272.
