Sultan firefighters rescue crawly creatures from house fire


Sometimes they put out fires, sometimes they wrestle with alligators.
And sometimes they do both.
Snohomish County Fire District 5 firefighters got a little more than they bargained for at a house fire in Sultan early Saturday morning. Firefighters were alerted to the fire, which was reported by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Department, at approximately 1:27 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22. The blaze was contained to a detached garage which had a living space built into it. One resident with minor burns and was treated and released at the scene.
Additionally, District 5 firefighters Steve Tonkin and Jeff Persons rescued an alligator and a tarantula, which were both inside the building.
The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time. As per typical residential fire protocol, the source of the fire is under investigation by the Snohomish County Fire Marshall.
District 5 responded with one fire engine, one emergency medical services vehicle and two command posts. District 26 in Gold Bar assisted with an aid car and District 3 in Monroe also responded with an additional engine.
The flames were extinguished rapidly. Firefighters Tonkin and Persons retrieved the alligator via his tail and pulled him from the smoky dwelling.
"He wasn't happy about being held by the tail; that was for sure,GÇ¥ said District 5 Fire Chief Merlin Halverson.
