Sultan girl, 13, makes money for medical mission with movie nights

Ellen Coy's parents supported her idea for a classic movie night fundraiser, just not the concept of hosting her movie night in their home. Not in the least dissuaded, 13-year old Coy simply went out and hired a movie theater.
Coy is raising money for a trip to Guatemala which will take place in August through Cascade Community Church in Monroe. She will travel with a group of approximately 10 of her peers on a medical mission. The group will stay and work in a hospital for seven days.
"We're going to be staying at a hospital that one of my youth pastor's friends works at,GÇ¥ said Coy.
International travel is encouraged by Coy's parents, Sultan residents Shannon and Teresa Coy, as is the responsibility of being able to pay for it.
Coy decided to raise money for her trip by showing a series of classic movies at the Monroe Galaxy Theatre. She felt that the big screen was an appropriate setting for the types of movies she would like to feature at her fundraising events, and set to work coordinating the event.
Once all the details where arranged, Coy received the tiniest bit of help from her great-aunt, Sultan Mayor Carolyn Eslick, who provided a template for the official press release.
Coy's movie night premiere was on March 14 with a showing of the American classic "Gone with the Wind,GÇ¥ and was a definite success.
"It was really great,GÇ¥ said Coy, who raised around $400 towards her trip to Guatemala. "I also did a silent auction at the theater.GÇ¥
"There were really awesome businesses that helped with the auction items,GÇ¥ she continued.
Pet Pros, Starbucks Coffee and Sweet Indulgence all donated auction items for Coy's premiere.
She looks forward to her next movie event, where she will show "To Kill a Mockingbird,GÇ¥ sometime in early June.
Coy is looking for businesses to help her endeavor in two ways. A business can sponsor her movie night, which offsets the cost of utilizing the theater, $300 for an evening, and ensures that all the proceeds from tickets sales can go towards her trip. Also, businesses can donate products and services for Coy to auction off to movie-goers before the show.
Tickets to her movie events are $10. To be added to her email list for event information and updates, or to reserve a seat at her next movie night, please contact her at savedbygrace740@gmail.com.
Coy's fundraising goal for her Guatemala trip is $2,000. Businesses interested in sponsoring a movie night or donating auction items should contact Ellen Coy via email, at savedbygrace740@gmail.com.
After Guatemala, Coy hopes to continue hosting classic movie nights and save money for an educational trip to Italy next summer.
