Sultan middle school student serves as Senate page

Kira Estes, an eighth-grade student from Sultan Middle School, served last month as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Estes was one of 23 students who served as Senate pages for the fourth week of the 2013 legislative session.
The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Pages are responsible for such tasks as transporting documents between offices as well as delivering messages and mail. They also spend time in the Senate chamber in addition to attending page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process.
"Learning as much as I have about the process a bill goes through is a lot of fun,GÇ¥ Estes said. "During the hearing we held for school I was able to see my thoughts and ideas reflected in the bill we passed. I feel validated and appreciated for all my hard work.GÇ¥
Newly elected state senator for the 39th District Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe, sponsored Estes for the week.
"I enjoy offering this opportunity to students like Kira,GÇ¥ Pearson said. "Serving as a page will help her understand why participating in our government is an important task.GÇ¥
Estes enjoys playing volleyball, traveling and pursuing her love of photography. She is the daughter of Carey and Jeff Estes of Startup.
Junior high/middle school and high school students who are interested in the Senate Page Program are encouraged to visit http://www.leg.wa.gov/Senate/Administration/PageProgram/.
