Sultan rallies around families of two gunshot victims

The Sultan community was shocked and dismayed last weekend when two young men who grew up there were shot, one fatally, in Orangevale, Calif. early Saturday morning.
According to the Sacramento County Coroner, Christian Fafnis-Horton, 20, died after he was shot at the Hazel Wood apartment complex where he lived with his best friend, Thomas McGrath.
Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, the Sacramento Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting. Fafnis-Horton had been sitting with McGrath at an outdoor table on an upstairs landing when they were approached by two assailants, who witnesses only described as dressed in dark clothes.
One of the assailants fired a gun at them, then he and his accomplice fled.
Fafnis-Horton died of a gunshot wound to the upper body. McGrath was injured, but he and another person tried to save his friend's life. Paramedics pronounced Fafnis-Horton dead at the scene, according to a police report.
McGrath remains hospitalized, according to friends, and police don't know the motive for the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.
Fafnis-Horton and McGrath both grew up together in Sultan, and moved to California together. June 28, Fafnis-Horton had announced his engagement to a young woman who lives in Seattle.
Sunday night, friends and family attended a ceremony and candlelight vigil for the friends.
