Sultan Shindig brings summer fun to town this weekend


With the gleaming hotrods, breathtaking carnival rides, history-laden logging attractions and vibrant parade, it just wouldn't be summer without Sultan's Summer Shindig festival.
This year's 32nd annual Summer Shindig celebration will kick off at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 10, and continue through 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12. Coordinated by the Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce, this year's festival will feature all the classic favorites, including a parade, street fair, car show, musical performances, lip sync and gravity-defying logging challenges. There will also be a few brand new components, including a motorcycle "Show and ShineGÇ¥ and a beer garden.
Discounted carnival tickets are available at the Sky Valley Visitor's Center, Coastal Community Bank, Sultan City Hall, the Loggers Inn, Sultan Liquor & Convenience store, the Coffee Corral, Sahara Pizza and at the Mountain View Diner in Gold Bar. The discounted price is $20 for an all-day unlimited pass, but the passes must be purchased before Friday, July 10.
Friday's festivities will begin with carnival rides that will be open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., including both kid and adult-themed carnival rides. At 4 p.m. the street fair will open, featuring crafts, local nonprofits, artists, food vendors, Snohomish County Fire District No. 5, kids' activities and much more.
At 5:30 p.m. the main stage entertainment will begin, with the Miss Gold Dust Pageant Royalty performing some of the top talent competition pieces from last year's pageant. At 7 p.m. classic rock band Planet Crouton will take the stage, and from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. the Wired Blues Band will dazzle guests with its blend of blues, rock, jazz and rockabilly.
Saturday, July 11, will start off with the traditional Sultan Shindig parade, which never disappoints. The hero-themed children's parade will take place from 10 to 10:30 a.m., with participating children dressed up as those who have inspired them the most.
The grand parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. featuring the best that the Sky Valley has to offer, including the award-winning Sultan High School Marching Band, the Sultan Middle School Skyhawk Marching Band, the Sultan Elementary School unicycle team, the West Coast Country Heat dance team, the Gunslingers Drill Team, the Index Arts Festival and much, much more.
Washington State Senator District Kirk Pearson will serve as this year's Grand Marshal. Pearson has served the 39th legislative district for 15 years, completing six terms as a member of the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 2012.
The carnival will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, as will one of Shindig's new attractions, the Motorcycle Show and Shine. Guests wishing to participate in the motorcycle show should check-in in front of the Sky Valley Visitor's Center (320 Main St.), which is located at the corner of 4th and Main Street. The show is being supported by the Everett Eagle Riders 13.
Meant to honor and commemorate Sultan's rich logging history, the Shindig logging contests will begin at 1 p.m., and will include several breath-taking attractions such as ax-throwing and speed climbing. Other competitions will include a Chokerman's Race, Obstacle Pole Buck, Hooktender's Race, Hot Saw event, Spar Pole Climbing, firewood chopping and a lot more.
"The logging contest is basically the same as always,GÇ¥ said Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debbie Copple. "We try really hard to kind of keep that consistent because the guys need to know what to expect.GÇ¥
Saturday's main stage performances will include Dakota Neuman, a YMCA Zumba party, the Sultan High School Show Choir and friends, Dawson Shaw, the Selena Dance Academy and the best of the Sultan Lip Sync competition.
Saturday night's headline performance will feature the Seattle Rewind, who will perform from 8:30 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. at the main stage. The 80s style cover-band specializes in everyone's favorites from the 1980s, including Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, Lita Ford, Pat Benatar, Van Halen, Billy Idol, Prince and many others. Seattle Rewind features Sultan's own Jonathan Pardue on the keyboards.
"We had kids that were roughly the same age, and so we were all band parents,GÇ¥ Copple said. "He can play the piano like nobody's business.GÇ¥
Saturday night will end with a fireworks display that will begin at 10:30 p.m., sponsored by EvergreenHealth.
Sunday morning will start off at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Volunteers of America Western Washington Sky Valley Senior Center (617 1st St.) in the large A-frame. A nondenominational community church service will be held at 10 a.m. at the main stage, and all are welcome to attend. Food will be served until noon, so those who don't make it to breakfast before church will still have time to get their fill of pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage after the service.
The 22nd annual Sultan Shindig Show and Shine Car Show will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 12. As a result, Sunday's festivities will include all things hotrod, featuring numerous show classes including best muscle car, sports car, street rod, hot rod, rat rod, custom car, custom truck, low rider, most unique, commercial "big rigGÇ¥ and more. Awards will be given for best flames, best engine compartment and best interior.
All throughout the weekend the beer garden will feature beer and barbecue. Numerous other food vendors will be serving throughout the weekend as well.
