Survival of VGH a matter of life or death

To the Editor,
Valley General Hospital in Monroe is an asset to East Snohomish County residents. They are in need of a levy lid increase and are asking voters in Snohomish Public Hospital District 1 to vote yes to support the hospital. A "YES' vote will ensure the future growth of East Snohomish County and surrounding communities.
We shudder to think about what would have happened if, when my mother-in-law had a burst aneurysm years ago, a hospital was not close enough to get her to treatment immediately. A 30 GÇô 40 minute drive either west or east could have been a matter of life or death.
To know that one can be cared for locally and immediately in the event of an emergency is not only important but comforting. Sports injuries, traffic accidents, falls, strokes, emergency surgeries, and many other situations dictate the need for immediate attention and a close-to-home hospital that provides overnight care. An urgent care center or a medical office facility cannot provide those services.
The recent affiliation with EvergreenHealth holds such possibilities for the hospital and the residents. I hope those possibilities are not thwarted before they have had opportunity to improve our community with increased and advanced medical services and opportunities.
When we think about the alternative of not having a community hospital if an emergency arises, we again shudder. To think of having to navigate down Hwy 522 or west across Hwy 2 to the nearest hospital could greatly reduce our chances for survival. We don't want ourselves, our family members or our friends to have to face that possibility.
Vote for a healthy community GÇô Vote for a healthy hospital - Vote YES on April 23.
