Three drivers escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon in a crash in which one of three involved vehicles was flipped onto its side and another vehicle was severely mangled.
At about 4 p.m. Tuesday, an eastbound red Honda Prelude with two Monroe occupants was waiting at the stoplight on the intersection of Fryelands Boulevard and U.S. 2 when a Ford F150 truck came up behind it and rear-ended it, according to the Washington State Patrol.
That knocked the red Honda into oncoming traffic, and it was struck by a Chevy Silverado. The Chevy then struck the guardrail and rolled onto its side. The Honda was entirely crushed on the passenger side and the roof was collapsed.
The Ford truck had front end damage.
In spite of the near total destruction of two of the vehicles involved, the driver of the Honda was taken to Providence in Everett with only minor injuries, and the passenger of that car went to Valley General Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Chevy truck, an Everett resident, also went to Providence to get checked out, even though the driver wasn't injured.
The driver of the Ford truck, a Monroe resident who also escaped without serious injury, was cited for speeding.
The highway was closed for more than an hour while responders cleared the scene.
Because there were no serious injuries, the reader boards on U.S. 2 counting the days since the last serious crash were not reset.
