Treasure Chest ready to serve after ribbon-cutting

The Treasure Chest, a children's clothing boutique for the families of fostered and adopted children, is officially ready to begin serving families.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Sunday, April 26, at the Treasure Chest, which is located inside Cascade Church (14377 167th Ave. S.E.) in Monroe.

Conceptualized by Monroe City Councilmember Kevin Hanford and his wife, Julie, the new community asset will allow families of foster and adopted children to obtain clothing, shoes, toys, books and other supplies at no cost.

The Hanfords, who have three biological and four adopted children, view the Treasure Chest as an opportunity to broaden their level of outreach.

"The whole point of this is to help the orphans and help those families that are helping the orphans,GÇ¥ Kevin said. "So it's really neat to see.GÇ¥

Julie's parents, Gerrie and Dale Johnson, were instrumental in helping to get the new boutique stocked, organized and ready to serve local families.

Numerous community members and public officials attended the celebration, including Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas, Monroe City Councilmember Jim Kamp, Pastor Michael Hanford and Cascade Church Pastor Nate Hettinga.

"One of the things that I think is important for all of us to recognize is that it's our job to love the Lord our God and to love one another,GÇ¥ Thomas said. "It's by doing things like this that we help bring people to Christ ' by helping them through our labors and also by praying for them. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity that you are giving people in our community.GÇ¥

Hettinga commended the Hanfords for seeing their vision through. He shared that the values at Cascade Church are to love God, love people and live generously, and the Treasure Chest boutique fully embodies those values.

"We've had a lot of people that have had the idea of something like this for a long time, but it took some implementers to say "We're going to do it. We're going to make it happen,'GÇ¥ Hettinga said. "So I just want to give props to the Hanfords ' thank you guys so much.GÇ¥
