Our Sultan High School (SHS) wrestling team has been very successful this season, to say the least. There have been two home wrestling meets so far. The first one was against Archbishop Murphy, and they won the meet 74-3. At the Sky Valley invitational, they had a score of 202.5 and were first place among 14 schools. The whole team is ranked third in state.
David Woo, James Mackenzie and Jamell Carroll are ranked second in state, and Brandon Webb is ranked third. The team has won two out of five tournaments so far, getting second place at the other three. They are undefeated in dual meets; if they beat Granite, South Whidbey and Lakewood, they will be undefeated in dual meets for three years in a row.
Another special thing this year is that there are three ladies on the wrestling team ' Brianna Shrout, Brittany Suter and Emily Castillo. Unfortunately, Suter was injured and has been unable to participate. Shrout has had seven wins and five losses this season so far.
"My dad got me into wrestling. Eventually he didn't want me doing it, but I grew to love it, it means a lot to me,GÇ¥ Shrout said. "He likes it better now that I'm wrestling girls, not guys.GÇ¥
This is Shrout's fourth year of wrestling, and by the time she is a senior, she wants to make it to state.
At a recent tournament, Castillo quickly pinned and dominated her opponent. "This is my very first year doing wrestling,GÇ¥ she said. "My older siblings wrestled, and I've been growing up around wrestling, and I really liked it. I tried basketball, but I wasn't really good at it and I kind of like to be aggressive, so I figured, "Why not try wrestling?'GÇ¥
There is one more home meet left in the season on Jan. 22, so please come support our wrestlers.
There are lots of events going on in the next two weeks, so here are reminders for the students and their parents. Upcoming events are posted in the school bulletin section of Powerschool.
The FAFSA is now open, and all seniors going to college next year should apply. If you need help, please see your counselor. College Bound Scholarship seniors must apply for the FAFSA as soon as possible.
From Jan. 12 to Jan. 30, SHS will hold a coat drive. Please bring your new or gently used coats and place them in the boxes outside the office. Coats will be donated to Operation Full Belly and the local V.O.A.
In sports, Boys' Basketball has an away game at Skykomish High School this Thursday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m. Girls' basketball plays Archbishop Murphy at home at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan 22, and boys wrestling has the Rubber Chicken Classic meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Kalama High School.
