Over spring break, one of our Turks, Amanda Markwood, traveled all the way to Haiti for a mission trip. "We flew to Port au Prince, then went to a village and stayed at a church, which was also used for a school,GÇ¥ she said. "On Monday, the kids came from 10 miles away, and 18 boys stayed in a small room. On Friday, they hiked back the mountains, and all the kids walk home in the dark. The kids were so friendly, and they would try and grab your skin and hair to be like you. We had a [vacation bible school] for three days, and we let [them] have a day to forget everything and play with soccer balls and bubble,s and we taught them Bible verses in English and in Creole, sang songs and did skits for them.
"I am so happy that I can attend school,GÇ¥ she continued. "Some kids can't go to school, and there were 21 year olds in kindergarten. And I see that I am very lucky to get an education. The average man is very small, unless you are born in a rich family. Their water is sewer water, and it's very muddy. Seeing how unfortunate they are, and seeing their living space was eye-opening. We went to an orphanage and seeing the kids without parents made me thankful for my parents, and now I know I shouldn't take anything for granted.GÇ¥
Last Saturday, Crosswater Community Church organized a "Walk 4 WaterGÇ¥ event. The event has raised $9,700 so far, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to help people get access to clean water. Approximately 200 people attended, including members from the church; the FLAME missions team; the recently wedded Highway 2 Freedom Runner, Dave Sivewright, along with his flag; the Sultan High School (SHS) National Honors Society members; and lots of community members. On April 17 and 18, the seniors selected by the Rotary Club collected nonperishable food items to donate to the Sultan Food Bank. They were at the Red Apple, Walmart, Haggens and Family Grocer. They filled about 30 full boxes of food. Thank you to all who donated!
So far, in the SHS golf season, the boys have had two wins and one loss, and the girls have had three losses. Golfer Kira Estes said, "We've lost all of our games, but our individual scores are improving.GÇ¥
Renelle Addington added, "I am improving since last year, and I like golf because it's the only sport where you can play while eating a cheeseburger...I think Mr. McMahon said that. I also like golf because of the llamas, the kangaroos and a donkey next to our course.GÇ¥

Students interested in applying to become next year's City of Sultan student representative can pick up applications in the main office.
