Visioning workshop to assist Monroe Schools planning

The Monroe School District is inviting the community to help "frame the future of Monroe Public SchoolsGÇ¥ through a collaborative event examining ways to ensure students leave Monroe schools equipped for the future.

The visioning workshop takes place 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Monroe High School, and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, childcare and interpreters. The goal of the day is to gather information to craft a renewed vision to guide the Monroe School District Board of Directors in accommodating the evolving educational needs of Monroe students.

Monroe School District Superintendent Dr. Fredrika Smith extended an invitation to chamber members during last week's Monroe Chamber of Commerce luncheon. She pointed out that although there are external factors guiding the way public schools function, school districts still possesses a high degree of control over what happens inside their schools.

Input from the community will better inform the process, so the district can base its programming on the needs and desires of families. The Monroe School District has some key assets, and it will be looking at ways to develop new strengths and enhance existing ones, Smith said.

"One of the best things about Monroe is we pride ourselves on having multiple pathways for kids,GÇ¥ she said. "That's very unique to Monroe and it's our intent to continue to grow that.GÇ¥

Smith said the district is working with a consultant to help facilitate the process, to make the best use of everyone's time.

Around 6,861 kids are enrolled in Monroe Public Schools. Smith likened the school district to one of the only businesses that can boast thousands of students crossing its threshold every day.

"When we think about both the responsibility that comes with that, and the opportunities that come with that, it can be pretty powerful,GÇ¥ Smith said. "As educators, we do realize that we are creating our own communities.GÇ¥
