Wake surf competition

Cathy Riner of Mukilteo works on her cut backs during practice for the-á6th Annual Wake Surf Open, Friday-Sunday on Lake Tye in Monroe. Riner, a local, has been surfing for about five years and works at Canyon Creek Cabinets right on the lake shore in Monroe.

Emily Agate of Fernie, BC., by way of England gets air above a wave created by the boat. In wake surfing, rather than perform stunts while sill being towed, riders wait for the boat to create a big wake, then let go of the tow rope and surf that wave.

"In competition we get to choose the speed of the boat and the bow angle,GÇ¥ said Agate. "It has an effect on the wave. Sometimes the wave is mushy.GÇ¥
