World's top wakeboarders return to Monroe

Some of the top wakeboarders in the world will arrive in Monroe the second weekend of July to compete on Lake Tye in one of the sport's major contests, the Mastercraft Wakeboard Tour King of Wake.
Four years ago, the organizers of the nationwide series of contests selected Monroe as one of five locations in the United States to host one of the contests that make up the Mastercraft series because the lake's small size makes for glassy, smooth water, as well as optimal viewing for fans.
The location proved to be ideal, and the promoters are returning again this year on July 12, 13 and 14.
The event, which is sponsored by Rockstar energy drink, is the fourth of five stops on the tour. The athletes accumulate points over the course of the five-stop series, and the highest point-holder is declared the champion at the end of the tour.
Fryelands Boulevard will be closed for the weekend, as vendors line the edge of Lake Tye Park, and viewing stands and a judging booth are placed on the banks.
Friday, the event is free to all who wish to watch, and will feature the qualifying rounds.
The finals take place on Saturday, and tickets are on sale online at www.kingofwake.com for $7 and will be $13 at the gate.
Sunday is all about entertainment, as the athletes take to the water to show off spectacular tricks and jumps in the Polaroid Action Big Air Contest.
"The jaw-dropping specialty event features some of the best Pro Men riders launching from a ramp to perform massive rotating aerials that are rarely accomplished in a traditional contest setting," said the promoters.
