Sports Shorts week of Oct. 4

Girls soccer

The Lady Cruisers picked up their first win of the season last week when they defeated the Hoquiam Grizzlies, 2-0. Hannah Kralik scored the first goal unassisted, and Michelle Kahler scored the second goal assisted by Hailey Rath. Both goals came in the second half. The Cruisers then dropped a tough match to Elma 2-1 later in the week. Kralik scored the lone Cruiser goal in the loss.

“Sara Smith has been incredible filling in goal for Tiereny Amaral,” head coach Machaela Swartout said. “Sara has been fearless and willing to be where her teammates really need her right now. About 15 minutes before halftime there was a 1v1 situation, and Sara dove on the ball, and a girl from the other team kicked her in the face. She suffered a gash on her nose and a nose bleed all at once. Blood was literally pouring from her face. She was insistent on getting back on the field and was able to get back in the second half after being cared for and checked on.”

The Cruisers ended their eight-game skid with a 3-2 victory over Morton-White Pass. Earlier in the week, they dropped matches to Hoquiam and Elma.
