After being awarded the No. 6 seed into the district playoffs and battling their way through some tough matches, the senior tennis duo of Cassidy Foster and Erin Mitchell won the Southwestern Washington 1A District IV doubles title May 17 at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.
They beat all the top three seeds to win the tournament.
In their first match of the day, the duo took on the No. 3-seeded doubles team from Montesano. The three-set, two-and-a-half-hour-long match went 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Eatonville overcame a 1-4 deficit in both the first and third sets to win the match.
The second match was another three-set marathon against Castle Rock, the No.2-seeded team. They lost the first set 3-6, but won the next two sets 6-4, 7-5 in a back-and-forth match.
The final match was against the undefeated No.1-seeded Tenino team. Foster and Mitchell defeated the Beavers duo in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to pick up the district title.
With that victory, Foster and Mitchell have qualified for the 2022 WIAA 1A Girls State Tennis Championships, Friday and Saturday at the Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima.
It has been 11 years since a tennis player from Eatonville has qualified for the state tournament.
