Just like caring for someone we love, movies can touch our hearts, awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. To celebrate family caregivers, Pierce County Human Services Aging and Disability Resources division is hosting a series of free films for seniors, caregivers, and care receivers. ‌The series theme is “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” and will feature three screenings, each shown on a Saturday.

On Jan. 11, the series kicks off with the showing of “Robot and Frank,” a heartwarming story about unexpected friendships. A former jewel thief with dementia, Frank, receives a gift from his son, a robot programmed to take care of his every need. Initially reluctant to accept the robot, Frank soon finds that it may have its uses, as he introduces it to a life of crime. This PG-13 rated film stars and ensemble cast including Academy Award nominee Frank Langella and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon.

“A Walk in the Woods” will be shown on Feb. 8. After years of living in Britain, celebrated travel writer Bill Bryson returns to New Hampshire. But instead of retiring, the 60-year-old announces he's going to hike over 2,000 miles along the Appalachian Trail. This R-rated film stars Academy Award winners Robert Redford and Emma Thompson along with Academy Award Nominee Nick Nolte.

March 8 brings “Unfinished Song.” Grumpy pensioner Arthur honors his recently deceased wife's passion for performing by joining the unconventional local choir to which she used to belong, a process that helps him build bridges with his estranged son, James. This PG-13 rated film stars Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave and Academy Award Nominee Terence Stamp.

All films will be shown at the Grand Cinema, located at 606 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma. Tickets are free but guests must register in advance at tinyurl.com/28tpt4k3. Showtime is at 10 a.m., doors open at 9:40 a.m. Tickets are available online one month before for each movie. Details about the film series can be found at piercecountywa.gov/filmseries.
