Anglers, vets can be Mineral Lake derby winners

American Legion Storm King Post 171's 21st annual Mineral Lake Fishing Derby, with anglers competing for prizes and proceeds benefitting veterans, is set for April 26. The derby, from 12:01 a.m. to 12 noon, promises to be "a weekend of fishing, food and mostly a whole lot of fun," said Kevin McMains, one of then organizers. Money that's raised during the derby will help fund projects for military vets, "especially our wounded warriors," McMains said. The derby is teaming with the Lions Club Project New Hope NW, which provides retreats for families of returning war veterans. "I went on this retreat myself, and I can say, it is a very good thing," McMains said. "There are lots of companies and corporations doing retreats. Almost none do entire families." Derby tickets are available at various locations in Mineral, and Post 171 members will be at the lake selling tickets, as well. The post is also selling turkey food basket tickets ($1 each or a book of 10 for $8) to support its building fund. In addition, the post will its annual derby pancake breakfast. The $6 cost includes all the pancakes you can eat, a slice of ham, and coffee, hot cocoa or orange juice. A breakfast of sausage gravy and biscuits also will be offered from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.-áLunch will be offered from 12 to 5 p.m. For the anglers, derby prizes a trolling motor, a rod and reel, and a $50 gift card for first, second and third place, respectively. The American Legion Post at 108 Front St. is where fish weigh-ins and prize announcements will be held.-á The veterans' charity can also be supported by send donations to Storm King Post 171, Attention 21st Annual Fishing Derby, P.O.
