Body of Norway climber recovered from mountain

The body of a climber from Norway was recovered Wednesday from Mount Rainier, where he apparently died during a storm last weekend. A team of four Mount Rainier National Park rangers reached Arvid Lathi, 58, in the afternoon at an elevation of 10,600 feet. The rangers helped a helicopter provided by Northwest Helicopters airlift Lahti off the mountain, park officials said. Lahti and a female climber from Canada left Paradise on March 24 for the mountain's summit via what's known as the Gibraltar Ledges route for climbers. They spent the night of March 25 at the shelter at Camp Muir and began their final ascent to the peak on the morning of March 26. They were caught that night in a severe storm with blowing snow and single-digit temperatures. The female climber, Monique Richard, 41, made it back to Camp Muir safely with the assistance of other climbers, officials said. Lahti died on the climbing route of apparent exposure.
