Three mountain climbers from Canada were rescued from Mount Rainier after falling into a crevasse Sunday. Officials at Mount Rainier National Park reported that the climbers, all males, suffered multiple injuries from the fall at the 11,400-feet level of the mountain on Emmons Glacier while they were attempting to reach the summit. The incident was reported at approximately 3:50 a.m. by another climbing team that was separate from the fall victims. A private helicopter operated by Northwest Helicopter lowered four of the park's climbing rangers at 11:40 a.m. approximately 100 feet from the accident scene. The rescued climbers were flown via the newly established short-haul helicopter rescue system to the Sunrise area, starting at 1:30 p.m. Two of the climbers were airlifted from Sunrise to Harborview Medical Hospital in Seattle, and the third climber was taken by ambulance to another hospital. Park officials said 36 people were involved in the rescue, including personnel from Olympia-based Northwest Helicopter, Airlift Northwest, and American Medical Response, which sent an ambulance from Buckley.
