Brown lawns at libraries will save some green

Lawns at Pierce County Library System branches will be brown this summer as a money-saving measure. A spokeswoman for the libraries (PCLS) said the grass won't be watered at any of the branches or the system's administrative center that have grass. Twelve of the 18 branches GÇô including Graham, Eatonville and Parkland-Spanaway GÇô have grass. PCLS anticipates $8,300 in savings from not watering and, as a result of letting lawns die, less mowing. While the library grounds will be less sightly, officials noted that homeowners and businesses often skip watering their lawns during the summer months, and the grass rebounds in the fall. Other library branches going brown include Bonney Lake, Buckley, Fife, Lakewood, South Hill, Steilacoom, Summit, and Sumner. PCLS has made other cost-cutting moves this year to stay within its operating budget. About 97 percent of the libraries' funding comes from property tax revenue, which has gone down in recent years.
