Burn ban declared

A burn ban in Pierce County will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday because of extremely dry conditions.
The Stage 1 ban, which is being declared by the Pierce County fire marshal and will remain in effect until further notice, applies to all outdoor burning except for small recreational fires in established fire pits at approved campgrounds or private property with the owner's permission. The use of gas and propane self-contained stoves and barbecues will be allowed.
Prompted by forecasts for prolonged dry weather, the ban was called for in conjunction with the Pierce County Fire Chiefs Association and the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Holders of approved DNR burn permits should call 800-323-BURN for more information, officials said.
