A ban on campfires in state parks and on other state-managed land has been lifted in western Washington. The state Parks and Recreation Commission announced the change Friday, the start of the Labor Day weekend when numerous campers traditionally flock to campgrounds. Because of dry, hot conditions, a statewide ban was ordered last month. The ban is still in effect indefinitely in eastern Washington, where conditions haven't improved. Rain this week west of the Cascades helped with the easing of restrictions here. Park managers have the discretion to restrict campfires if they believe it's necessary to ensure visitor safety and mitigate risk of wildfires, officials said.
