Bethel School District's career and technical education program announced its Teacher of the Year, Advisory Member of the Year and Student of the Year awards during its annual end-of-year showcase and celebration.
Power Sports Equipment instructor Michael Collins was named Teacher of the Year for bringing "real world," hands-on experiences to his students, district officials said.
Collins' students at Bethel High School describe him as being firm, fair and consistent in his approach to teaching and classroom management. He stresses teamwork and often has students engaged in small group activities such as taking engines apart and reassembling them.
Officials noted that Collins spends his own time working with students before and after school. He also is a primary organizer of one the district's largest school/community events, the Bethel High Yearbook Signing and Car Show.
Other honors announced by career and technica education (CTE) officials:
" Kevin Fochtman, vice president of Advanced Composite Education Services, was selected CTE Advisory Member of the Year. Foctman has worked with Spanaway Lake High School teacher Greg Rohr and CTE assistant director George Aszklar on providing up-to-date technlogy for manufacturing and aerospace programs at the school.
" The staffs at each of the district's secondary schools selected students for Student of the Year based on their work in CTE programs. This year's award winners include Sam Lopez of Bethel Junior High School, Elise Phillips of Bethel High, Brandon Tungsvik of Cedarcrest Junior High School, Emily Clark of Cougar Mountain Junior High School, Ashley Wood of Challenger Secondary School, Avory Tedtaotao of Frontier Junior High School, Alyssa Lemka of Graham-Kapowsin High School, Austin Dowell of Liberty Junior High School, Dawson Wandler of Spanaway Junior High School, and Alen Salausa of Spanaway Lake High.
Students in instructor Kim Munson's culinary essentials program at Bethel High received a People's Choice Award for cake design as part of the showcase. Matt Brown, Taylor Chambers, John Gould, Amber Jacques, Elijah Ua, Taylor Chambers and Colton Drown were honored for their "Pizza in a Box" cake.
The Bethel district's CTE program is open to students in grades nine through 12 and emphasizes career pathway, ongoing education and training beyond high school, and an understanding of how learning can be applied outside of school.
Among other activities, the students develop a portfolio and present a project that demonstrates their skills and accomplishments
