Cruisers in thick of title chase

The Eatonville Cruisers battered Elma 11-4 last Saturday, giving themselves a commanding role in the race for the 1A Evergreen League high school baseball championship. The victory over Elma put Eatonville in a tie with Aberdeen for first place in the Evergreen with matching 9-1 records. That set up a showdown this week between the co-leaders, who were scheduled to face off Tuesday in Eatonville and Thursday in Aberdeen. The Cruisers scored in each of the first six innings while pounding out 14 hits against Elma. Eatonville started the barrage in the first inning when Joel Rodriguez reached on an error and AJ Goetz doubled down the leftfield line to score Luke Keefer, who was pinch running for Rodriguez. Daniel Fuller followed with a single to knock in Goetz. In the second inning, a single by Colin Streich drove in two runs. Eatonville added two more in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Jared Henricksen, before pulling away from the Eagles in the fourth inning when Goetz and Fuller had consecutive RBI singles to push the lead to 9-3. The outcome was one of two routs of Ealma last week by the Cruisers. They won 11-3 on April 19. Jay Brymer's bases-clearing double in the third inning put his team ahead to stay at 4-3. Brymer and Fuller each had three RBIS, and pitcher Colin Streich tossed a five-hitter over five innings for his fifth victory.
