Curtain goes up on general election

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch One race that's been so close so far and three others that haven't are headed toward south Pierce County voters for the general election this fall. The primary election that ended in August included a countywide race for Pierce County District Court judge. Karl Williams eked out a second-place finish and will face Jeanette Lineberry in the general election. Williams finished 448 votes ahead of Sandy Allen in the three-way primary contest. Lineberry received about 39 percent of the votes overall. Williams and Allen divided the rest. All three candidates have had experience as appointed judges at the District and municipal court levels. In the Second Legislative District, which includes south Pierce County, state Rep. J.T. Wilcox finished with 72 percent of the votes and will move on along with Steve Nielson, who finished second among three candidates. Wilcox, a Republican, is seeking his third two-year term in office. Nielson is a member of the Libertarian Party. The race for the district's other representative is between Republican Graham Hunt, who was appointed earlier this year and is waging his first campaign, and Democrat Greg Hartman, who was a candidate for the same office in the 2012 election. They automatically advanced to the general election as the only entrants in the primary. The Second District, which also takes in part of Thurston County, has 11,210 registered voters in Pierce County; 22 percent of them voted in the primary. One other contest in the primary election involving voters in south Pierce County resulted in 8th District U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, a Republican, advancing with 63 percent of the votes. His November opponent will be Democrat Jason Ritchie. Twenty-four percent of the district's 23,106 voters in Pierce County cast ballots. The county's elections department will mail ballots to voters Oct. 17 for the general election, which ends Nov. 4.
