Defeat looms for fire levy

Fire District 23's levy is failing by a wider margin after the latest release of results from the primary election.
The Pierce County elections department reported Monday that 162 votes had been cast against the measure and 157 for it, or 50.4 percent rejecting it. The levy will pass or fail with s simple majority on one side or the other.
Eleven votes remained uncounted out of the total of 330 ballots that were turned in by people living in the district that includes Ashford, Elbe and Alder.
If the levy fails, the district's commissioners plan to submit it to voters a second time. District officials say the property tax measure is needed to support fire protection and emergency medical services.
