Voters made some interesting and, in many cases, predictable decisions in the primary election that drew to a close last week.
In the predictable column were the advancements to the general election in November of state Sen. Randi Becker and her challenger, Bruce Lachney. They, by far, are the candidates who were most familiar to voters, although a third candidate in the primary, Jim Vaughn, was a credible one.
The same summary applies to the race for the County Council seat that represents south and southeast portions of the county. Jim McCune, a longtime state legislator, and Marilyn Rasmussen, who served even longer in that role, were the heavy favorites to again be the choices of voters GÇô and were. Corey Drury, the third candidate, is 25 years old and will have lots more opportunities to run for office again if he so chooses.
Another expected result of the primary was the refutal of county Assessor-Treasurer Dale Washam. Being the center of controversy, as he has been throughout his one and now only term in office, can last only so long before voters decide it's time for a change. The agent of that change will be Mike Lonergan or Billie O'Brien, both worthy heirs to the assessor-treasurer position.
On the interesting side of results was the nip-and-tuck voting for and against (in nearly equal amounts) Fire District 23's levy. District officials have made it clear the levy is needed to support its services. The voters apparently aren't so sure.
