Do-it-yourselfers have event to do more

If a do-it-yourself lifestyle is your thing, DIYfest is for you. Experts and aficionados will showcase their skills through hands-on activities during the event scheduled for Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway. The free event, presented by Pierce County Library System and sponsored by Pierce County Parks and Recreation, will feature useful skills on a variety of topics, from crafting and sustainable living to cooking and home renovation. Specifically, participants can: " Design their own grow space and plant a tree. " Learn about no-energy hoop houses. " Make ink from berries. " Create simple crafts for kids. " Get tips on home repairs. " Try a "fashion hack.GÇ¥ " Make a purse from a mushroom. " Find out about gleaning. " Crochet a scarf and create gift projects. " Plant a tree. " Conduct easy science experiments. " Find out how do-it-yourselfers did it in the 12th century. " Make a fiber doll and spin wool into yarn. " Repair a bicycle. " Learn how to ferment foods. " Paint a rain barrel. Fair Tradin', a group that promotes bartering, will hold a demonstration and answer questions about bartering, followed by a barter fair, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Other event features will local authors and kitchen demonstrations. And food trucks, including VietNom Nom, Lumpia World, XO Expresso and Curbside Urban Cuisine, will be on hand. Sprinker Recreation Center is located 14824 C St. S.
