Some of the best figure skaters in the Northwest will have fond memories of Sprinker Recreation Center. The top four finishers in each category of competition at the Spanaway facility during the Northwest Pacific Regional U.S. Figure Skating Championships qualified for the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships, which will be staged Nov. 19-23 in Oakland, Calif. The regional and sectional events lead to the national championships next January in Boston, Mass. GÇô the final qualifying competition before the selection of the 2014 U.S. Olympic team. Skaters from Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming and Montana competed at Sprinker Oct. 3-8. They ranged in age from pre-teens to young adults in their 20s. Of the 319 entrants, 105 in the top flights of the competition vied for places in the sectionals. Top finishers included: " In the intermediate ladies division, MacKenzie Caputo of Seattle's Highland Skate Club won. " Billy Stone of Missoula, Mont. won the intermediate men's short program and free skate. " Junior ladies: Tiana Lee of Highland Skate Club and Brittney Shlue of Skate Club of Oregon finished first and second, respectively, in the short and free programs. " Senior ladies: Alison Jeffers of Seattle Skate Club won the short program, and Samantha Stevens of Skate Club of Oregon came out on top in the free skate. " In the vuvenile boys and girls divisions, the winners were Ivan Brown of Highland Skate Club and Cheyenne King of Lilac City Figure Skating Club in Spokane. The competition was organized and hosted by Lakewood Figure Skating Club. Sprinker was the scene of a regional meet for the first time since 2000. It also was the first major competition for the rink since it was renovated by Pierce County in 2011-12.
