An Eatonville School District elementary school will formally be recognized Feb. 25 as a state STEM Lighthouse School for 2013-14. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn will present the award at Columbia Crest Elementary School during an assembly in the school's gymnasium, beginning at 9 a.m. The event is open to the community, a school spokeswoman said. Lighthouse-designated schools provide technical assistance and advice to other schools and communities that want to create a learning environment focused on STEM - science, technology, engineering and math. As part of its distinction, Columbia Crest received an $18,000 grant, part of which is to be used to share best practices and the school's STEM success story. In a related development, Columbia Crest will host a STEM Career Fair May 20 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The Ashford school is inviting community members who work in a STEM-related field to consider participating in an assembly which will allow students to hear all presentations, and then provide displays and answer specific questions of students. Presenters are being asked to have a hands-on element for students to engage in after the assembly.
